MAYWOOD REPORTS ANNUAL CRIME STATISTICS DOWN

Overall crime reduced by 14% for 2007

Maywood, Illinois – The Village of Maywood Police Department has released the following crime statistics for FY 2007:

  • Homicides - 54% decrease; 11 documented in 2006 compared to 5 in 2007.

  • Aggravated Battery with guns - 46% decrease. 

  • Robberies - 24% decrease.

  • Aggravated assaults - 20%.

  • Burglaries - 4% decrease, 298 burglaries in 2006 compared to 285 in 2007.

  • Thefts - 19% decrease.

  • Motor Vehicle Thefts - 10% decrease.

  • There was an increase in reported criminal sexual assaults in 2007 with active and ongoing investigations due to pending crime lab results. 

  • Documented Arsons related to property damage increased by 2 (two) in 2007.

Deputy Police Chief Phillip Bue states, "I think we are moving in a positive direction when it comes to crime reduction.  Multi-jurisdictional partnerships, directed patrols, community involvement, state of the art technology and neighborhood revitalization have all been contributing factors. “

The Maywood Police Department partnered with Loyola University School of Medicine and the local faith community to implement an annual gun buy back program.  In 2006, 79 firearms were successfully removed from the streets and 18 guns were removed in 2007.  Additionally, M.A.P.S., our Maywood’s Alternative Policing Strategy assists in educating residents for a better understanding of police department operations and how citizen involvement can help in crime prevention. As Maywood Police Chief Elvia Williams states, “The Maywood Police Department will continue to strive toward providing excellence in policing services, making Maywood a place where people want to live, work and play.”

It should be noted that the increase in arrests in 2007 and a more accurate tallying system account for some of the increases reported for 2007.  This system is the State of Illinois protocol and comparable with other municipalities.
