Four Maywood
firefighters,
who rescued a
nine year-old
boy from a
burning
building, will
receive
Certificate of
Recognition
awards this
Friday, May 13
at the 18th
Annual
Firefighter
Medal of Honor
Awards Ceremony
and the Fallen
Firefighters
Memorial Service
in Springfield.
This award
ceremony is
sponsored by the
State of
Illinois and the
Office of the
State Fire
Marshall.
Honorees are
David Krefft,
21 year Maywood
firefighter;
Anthony Morrone,
16 year veteran;
six-year Maywood
firefighter
Richard
Gustafson;
and Steven
Wojtowycz, a
three-year
Maywood
firefighter.
Last March 15,
these
firefighters
responded to a
fire at the
Bronco Resale
Shop, 20 N. 5th
Avenue in
Maywood.
According to
Maywood Fire
Chief John
Cadagin, who
will escort the
four honored
firefighters
this Friday,
“these Maywood
firefighters
acted
courageously and
without
hesitation,”
Cadigan stated.
Chief Cadagin
went on to say
the four arrived
on the scene and
immediately
climbed to the
second floor in
response to a
report that
someone was
still in the
building.
Firefighter
Morrone found a
nine year-old
boy still asleep
in the rear
bedroom and
removed him from
the building.
All four
firefighters
continued to
search for any
other possible
occupants.
After it was
determined that
all residents
were accounted
for, the quartet
quickly pulled
out of the
building because
of deteriorating
conditions.
