MAYWOOD HONORED BY STATE OF ILLINOIS FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION EFFORTS

The Illinois Association of Historic Preservation Commissions (IAHPC) announced at its annual awards ceremony last Friday that the Village of Maywood has been selected for a 2010 Local Preservation Award.  The IAHPC recognized Maywood “for significant contributions to historic preservation in the State of Illinois.”

According to IAHPC, Maywood developed an ordinance deemed “a model in Chicago’s comprehensive plan for the area.”  Other highlights of the Maywood Preservation Commission included public education and outreach; sponsoring historic house walks, and inviting outside specialists to speak at public forums on preservation topics.  A key initiative of the Maywood Commission was to successfully designate all 17 National Register of Historic Places properties as local landmarks.

“It is noteworthy that the Maywood Historic Preservation Commission achieved so much in just its initial year as a certified federal Certified Local Government,” stated Maywood Village Manager Jason Ervin.  “The village wishes to especially thank Commission Chairman Tom Kus, Vice Chair Vickie Haas and the other five commissioners for this state-wide recognition of their hard work and preservation efforts,” Ervin added. 

The annual IAHPC awards are “intended to encourage, promote, support and recognize historic preservation commissions and individuals in the state, and to help educate the general public about the efforts and contributions of these dedicated volunteer preservation commissions and individuals”, according to an IAHPC press release issued after the awards announcement.
