MAYWOOD
REDUCES CRIME
AGAIN IN 2010
Shootings,
Criminal Sexual
Assault and
Robbery Drop
Significantly
from 2009
Following the
dramatic 15%
reduction in
crime from 2008
to 2009, the
Village of
Maywood reduced
crime once again
last year by
1.4%.
Double-digits
drops included
arson (75%),
criminal sexual
assault (45%),
robbery(24%) and
motor vehicle
theft (12%).
Shootings
dropped 9% from
the previous
year.
There were three
murders last
year, one more
than the
previous year.
Before 2009, the
fewest murders
recorded in
Maywood were
five, which
occurred in 2007
and in 1998.
Maywood recorded
as many as 20
murders as
recently as
2003.
Mayor Henderson
Yarbrough, Sr.
praised the
village’s police
department for
continuing to
reduce crime in
Maywood. “In
behalf of all of
our residents, I
want to thank
Chief Timothy
Curry, his
management team
and all of the
police personnel
responsible for
making Maywood a
safer
community. My
administration
will continue to
provide whatever
resources are
necessary to
ensure public
safety in our
village,” he
added.
Chief Curry
attributes
Maywood’s
improved public
safety record to
“visible and
vigilant
enforcement by
our officers.”
Curry also
wanted to
emphasize the
enforcement
tools utilized
by the
department
including
Maywood
Alternative
Policing
Strategy (M.A.P.S),
satellite
cameras
strategically
located
throughout the
village, a
Special
Enforcement Team
involved in
crime
suppression
activities, and
collaboration
with partners
such as other
villages, Cook
County,
CeaseFire and
state agencies
involved in
crime
prevention.
Curry promised
to “keep
retooling and
working with the
community
proactively to
further reduce
crime in
Maywood.”
