MAYWOOD
HOSTS ANOTHER
MALE BASKETBALL
PROGRAM THIS
WINTER
Flush
with the success
of last year’s
“Midnight
Basketball
League,” the
Village of
Maywood has
established a
10-team league
at the Maywood
Multi-Purpose
Center, 200 S. 5th
Avenue. More
than 100 men,
ages 21 and
older, are
competing in the
two-month
league.
“This is another
tool we are
using to provide
positive
alternatives to
street
activities,”
proclaimed Mayor
Henderson
Yarbrough.
“Whether it’s
our police
officers
volunteering
with Proviso
East High School
students in
football or
village
volunteers
coaching these
basketball
players at night
in our gym, the
bottom line is
that
constructive
interaction
reduces the
potential for
destructive
choices by our
residents,” the
mayor added.
Last year the
village
sponsored teams
in a
state-funded
basketball
league, which
successfully
directed local
youth to a
positive
athletic
program. The
Village of
Maywood Men’s
Basketball
League started
its games in
late October;
the season runs
through December
17. Games are
on Tuesday and
Thursday
evenings.
