Maywood
Targets a
Recycling
Increase among
Residents
The Maywood
Environmental
Beautification
Commission is
hosting an open
forum on Monday,
August 10, 7:30pm in
the Village Council
Chambers at 125 S. 5th
Avenue, Maywood.
Residents are
encouraged to attend
to learn about
recycling do’s and
don’ts, and to ask
questions about how
to participate in
village recycling.
Allied Waste, the
contracted waste
collectors for the
Village of Maywood,
provides blue
recycling bins upon
request for every
Maywood household.
Residents place the
bins at the curb or
in the alley
alongside their
normal garbage bin
on the appointed
waste collection day
for pick-up.
Confusion regarding
what can or cannot
be recycled
sometimes hinders
wider participation
in the recycling
program.
Additionally, many
do not understand
the value of
recycling.
In addition to
recycling, the
Environmental
Beautification
Commission
emphasizes the need
to reduce and reuse
products rather than
the
disposable-product
mentality prevalent
in years past.
The Maywood
Environmental
Beautification
Commission was
established at the
end of 2008, and is
chartered to develop
a prioritized agenda
for addressing
environmental and
beautification
opportunities and
concerns throughout
the village. The
Commission is
focusing initially
on short-term
initiatives which
seek to generate
environmental
awareness at a
low-cost throughout
the village. As
long-term goals are
mapped out, the
Commission aims to
guide Maywood
towards a reputation
of leadership in
community
environmental
participation
throughout the
Chicagoland area.
Agendas for the Open
Forum on August 10
as well as for the
normally scheduled
Commission meetings
(2nd
Mondays of each
month) can be viewed
at the Maywood
Village Hall, 40
Madison Street, or
outside the Village
Council Chambers at
125 S. 5th
Avenue. For further
information, contact
Lori Sommers,
Director of
Community
Development at

Additional
information will be
forthcoming on this
village website.
