A 17 year-old
Maywood resident
was indicted
this morning on
seven separate
criminal charges
including three
counts of first
degree attempted
murder of a
police officer.
Gerard Thompson,
213 Augusta in
Maywood, is
being held on
$250,000 bond.
Thompson
surrendered to
Maywood Police
after an
altercation that
started Sunday
afternoon when a
citizen called
police reporting
a man with a gun
standing at 409
N. Lake in
Maywood.
Maywood police
responded and
Thompson
allegedly shot
at the officers
who responded by
shooting back.
A chase ensued
with Thompson
fleeing to the
rear of 223 N. 3rd
Avenue. In
pursuit were
Maywood’s
Special Response
team, Chief
Timothy Curry,
Deputy Chief
Brian Black and
officers from
various
communities
including
Broadview,
Hillside,
Bellwood and
Memorial Park.
Also on hand
were the Cook
County Sheriff’s
Police and the
Maywood Fire
Department.
Maywood
Lieutenant
Donald Mobley,
who took the
lead, saw
Thompson put the
gun to his head
and ask to speak
to his family.
Negotiations
took place
between
Thompson, family
members, and
Lieutenant
Mobley.
Thompson then
put down the
firearm and was
taken into
custody.
Along with the
three
first-degree
attempted murder
charges,
Thompson faces
three counts of
aggravated
discharging of a
firearm, and a
charge of
aggravated use
of a weapon.
Chief Curry
credits the
public for
providing
tremendous
assistant to the
police. “It was
a citizen who
first called us,
citizens on the
street who
alerted us where
the perpetrator
fled to, and a
whole group of
citizens who
helped by being
respectful and
not impeding our
progress in
apprehending
this
individual,” he
stated.
The Chief also
wanted to thank
the parents of
Thompson for
their role in
ensuring that
this situation
would have a
“peaceful
conclusion.”
