Starting the end
of April, the
Village of
Maywood will
install security
cameras
throughout the
village. The
$1.3 million
investment will
consist of 77
“skycams”
strategically
placed.
“Our priority is
to protect our
residents and
make Maywood a
safer
community,”
Mayor Henderson
Yarbrough Sr.
stated. “These
cameras will
provide our
police
department with
another tool to
deter and
prevent crime.”
Camera locations
were selected
based upon input
from residents,
calls for
service and
officer input,
according to
Police Chief
Elvia Williams.
“Police officers
will have the
ability to view
the cameras from
remote
locations, which
will assist us
with properly
identifying
problem
individuals and
addressing
problems in a
timely manner,”
Chief Williams
explained.
Current
Technologies,
the surveillance
camera vendor,
presently has
contract with 15
other
Chicago-area
communities.
Bellwood
reported a 46.8%
reduction in
crime since
installing the
skycams four
years ago,
according to
Steven
Daugherty,
Current
Technologies
representative.
Among sites
selected for
cameras are all
five public
schools in
Maywood and six
sites along the
Prairie Path.
