Maywood Police Safety Belt Enforcement Initiative Begins

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 5 through 24.   Most of the fatal deaths of the vehicle occupants were because of those individuals non-use of safety belts and child safety seats. The Maywood Police Department in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation will be conducting daily safety belt enforcement zones throughout the Village of Maywood during the period of May 19, 2008 through June 2, 2008:

o    May 19, 2008      15th Avenue & St. Charles Road

o    May 20, 2008      5th Avenue & Lexington Street

o    May 21, 2008      19th Avenue & South Maywood Drive

o    May 22, 2008      4th Avenue & Washington Boulevard

o    May 23, 2008      12th Avenue & Madison Street

o    May 24, 2008       4th Avenue & Main Street

o    May 25, 2008       1st Avenue & Madison Street

o     May 26, 2008      23rd Avenue & Lexington Street

o    May 27, 2008      13th Avenue & Washington Boulevard

o    May 28, 2008      19th Avenue & Oak Street

o    May 29, 2008       5th Avenue & Quincy Street

o    May 30, 2008       4th Avenue & Washington Boulevard

o    May 31, 2008       9th Avenue & Chicago Avenue

o    June 1, 2008       17th Avenue & Washington Boulevard

o    June 2, 2008        9th Avenue & Quincy Street

At above listed different locations, uniformed patrol officers, operating marked squads vehicles, will be posted at the intersections. Vehicle drivers and occupants who are observed by Patrol Officer(s) not wearing their seat belts will be ticketed.  It has been noted that visible enforcement programs focusing on these violations offer the greatest potential for changing these behaviors.  Many lives can be saved by changing public attitudes regarding the non-use of safety belts and child safety seats.
