The Village of
Maywood Appoints
New Historic
Preservation
Commission
In February,
Maywood Mayor
Henderson
Yarbrough Sr.
convened the
Village of
Maywood’s first
Landmarks
Commission with
the appointment
of five
commissioners.
The
new commission
members are Tom Kus, Chairman,
Vicki Haas, Vice
Chairman, Karen
Jones,
Secretary, Lennel Grace,
and Wayne Beals.
Each member
brings a unique
set of skills to
the commission
along with a
determined
interest in
preserving and
promoting the
ongoing
revitalization
of Maywood.
Mayor Yarbrough
stated that he
is pleased to
have found such
a qualified and
diverse group of
individuals to
serve on the
newly
established
commission. “I
am delighted to
get the
Landmarks
Commission
launched as a
part of the
Village’s
efforts to raise
awareness of the
positive
attributes of
Maywood.”
The Landmarks
Commission’s
goal is to help
promote and
educate the
community on the
historic
resources within
the village that
represent the
heritage of the
Village and
people of
Maywood. The
Village was
officially
incorporated in
1881 and has an
extensive
collection of
historic homes
and properties
of varying
architectural
styles that
include
Victorian and
Prairie School
architecture.
Many of
Maywood’s
buildings were
done by
prominent
architects of
the time
including
Drummond, Van
Bergen, EE
Roberts and
Talmadge and
Watson.
The Village of
Maywood and its
Landmarks
Commission are
pleased to
collaborate with
the Maywood
Public Library
in observing
this first month
long Historic
Preservation
Month.
Commissioners
will be
available to
meet with the
public on the
following two
occasions at the
Maywood Public
Library, 115
South 5th
Avenue:
Wednesday, May
14, 2008 between
6:30 and 8:30 p.m, and
Saturday, May
31, 2008,
between 10 a.m.
and 12 noon.
The Library has
prepared a list
of resources in
the library as
well as on line
for researching
your home and
learning about
historic
preservation.
Commission
Chairman Tom Kus
urges you to,
“Mark your
calendars and
plan to stop in,
meet your
Landmarks
Commissioners
and learn more
about Maywood’s
rich housing
treasures.
This Place . . .
Your Place . . .
Matters!”
The Maywood
Historic Homes
Housewalk will
be held July 13,
2008 and is
co-sponsored by
The Village of
Maywood and
NoMCO (North
Maywood
Community
Organization).

The Commission
meets every 1st
and 4th
Thursday, at
Maywood Council
Chambers, 125
South 5th
Avenue.
